Location and soil
The grapes for this wine come from the Kirchleiten vineyard. This area is characterized by calcareous
clay marl layers (marine deposits from the Tertiary sea – Laa Formation).
Vineyard management
Our vineyards are Demeter-certified and are cultivated biodynamically according to the principles of
Rudolf Steiner.
Vinification
Selective harvest by hand in mid-October. The grapes were destemmed and spontaneously fermented
on the skins; malolactic fermentation and aging took place in used 600-liter wooden barrels. Bottled in
January 2023.
Vintage 2019
The beginning of 2019 brought no extremely low temperatures (max. -10°C) and snowfall was rare.
February was very warm with temperatures reaching +20°C. Waiting for rain dominated the
winegrowers’ lives in March, which was warm, dry, and windy (only 24 mm of precipitation). April was
similar, with bud break around April 18th and the vines reaching the 3-5 leaf stage around April 28th. A
rainy, cool May (100 mm of precipitation with some prolonged rain and sub-zero temperatures on May
8th) slowed vine growth, but the soil was able to absorb the necessary moisture. The very hot
temperatures of up to +35°C in June and July, accompanied by some thunderstorms, brought about a
growth spurt, which resulted in the berries softening (even in Grüner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc) by
around August 17th. Many fungal infections also dried out due to the intense sunshine. The grape
harvest at our vineyard began on August 22nd in sunny weather and ended on October 5th in cold,
stormy conditions. The 2019 wines, made from early-harvested grapes, exhibit lightness and fresh
acidity. Later-harvested grapes yielded ripe aromas and depth. The red wines impress with their
pronounced color and ripeness.
Wine description
Dark ruby colour. Subtle hints of spice underlie nuances of blackcurrant and licorice; a touch of ripe
sour cherry. Supple tannins, fresh structure. Inviting to drink with good aging potential.
