Location and soil

The Retzer Parapluieberg is located directly on the Manhartsberg mountain near the Retz windmill. The grapes for this red wine come from the Sonnleiten vineyard. Weathered primary rock soils of granite and gneiss characterize the wines of these sites.

 Vineyard management

Our vineyards are Demeter-certified and are cultivated biodynamically according to the principles of Rudolf Steiner.

 Vinification

Selective harvest by hand at the end of October. The grapes were destemmed and spontaneously fermented on the skins; malolactic fermentation and aging took place in used wooden barrels (600 l). Bottled in September 2025.

Vintage 2021

The winter of 2021 brought only a few severe cold spells. There was no snow, and early frosts (max. -11°C in February) alternated with warm days. Early March saw a few days of frost and some snowfall. Otherwise, March was sunny and warm. April was quite cool (April 9th -4°C). The vines budded around April 25th, 2021. Due to the mild winter, our soils were already very dry by the beginning of May. May saw some light rainfall and changeable weather (sunny, windy, cool). June was sunny (June 11th +30°C), and the vines flowered (around June 19th) in hot temperatures. On June 21st, severe storms with hail and extreme winds hit the Weinviertel region. Fortunately, our village escaped damage. Early July saw high temperatures with frequent thunderstorms and cool nights, posing a risk of fungal infections on the vines. Intensive canopy management in the vineyard (removing leaves from the grape zone to improve air circulation) was crucial! August also saw numerous thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Harvesting began at our winery on September 5th, initially under sunny skies. The main harvest was accompanied by several rainy days and cool temperatures (significant temperature fluctuations between day and night).
Our 2021 vintage wines are medium-bodied. The higher acidity, combined with a high tartaric acid content, is not aggressive. The wines possess crystal-clear fruit with a remarkably creamy texture.
